The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Thursday released a set of new rules for online gaming, banning any game that involves betting and wagering. With the new rules, the Centre has prohibited any game that involves betting and wagering and entails a framework of multiple self-regulatory organizations (SROs).
These SROs will be responsible for declaring online games permissible based on whether games offer to wager. The new rules define 'online game' as "a game that is offered on the internet and is accessible by a user through a computer resource or an intermediary".

New rules for online gaming

Minister of State for IT Rajeev Chandrasekhar announced while speaking to reporters and said that online games involved in wagering or betting will fall foul of new online gaming rules. He added that there will be multiple SROs, and these SROs will have participation from all the stakeholders including but not limited to the industry.
"We are dealing with a framework that allows for all online gaming to be determined as permissible or not, by an SRO and there will be multiple SROs," Chandrasekhar said.
Permissibility will be determined with the simple principle of whether wagering is involved and "if wagering is involved, the SRO will be in a position to say that those online games are not permissible."
As per the final rules, the government will appoint multiple self-regulatory organizations (SROs) comprising industry representatives, educationists, and other experts such as child experts, psychology experts, etc. To begin with, the government will notify three SROs but can add more later.
